DCE Consulting Expertise:

IAPS consultants worked with the Open Software Foundation (OSF) during the inception of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), provided courseware development, software engineering and customer support services to DCE platform and tools vendors, and assisted many companies to assess, implement and support DCE-based production systems. Our assignments have included:

Working on a high throughput, real-time, DCE-based transactional system for lottery and horse racing. Coordinating interactions between US and international development teams. Involvement ranged from designing security architecture to teaching the client's IT department how to take the system live and maintain it securely.
Serving as the Security Architect on a development proposal for a major US health care provider. Designed and implemented a prototype DCE-based medical records storage and distribution system.
Helping develop a commercial development tool that enabled DCE applications to be built without the programmer needing to directly access the low level DCE APIs.
Representing multiple vendors including HP, IBM, DEC and Gradient Technologies and helping their customers implement mission critical systems, improve their DCE application performance, and debug problems.
Comparing DCE implementations on rival platforms and recommending the best solution for clients.
Upgrading old, unsupported DCE client and server software, to newer supported versions.

DCE Consulting Services:

Our typical technical consulting assignments include one or more of the following tasks:

DCE administration, including setting up and fine tuning CDS and Security Replication, designing simple yet functional backup strategies, reviewing and enhancing DCE security, writing and implementing disaster recovery plans, and much more
DCE client and server software upgrading, including migration paths not supported by vendors
Reconfiguration and rewriting portions of applications for migration to new target environments
DCE system planning, assessment, cell and application deployment
Design of DCE-based applications and system architecture to meet evolving customer requirements
DCE performance enhancement and system testing
Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of DCE systems and software
Informal mentoring and formal hands-on training classes

Now that DCE is a mature technology, our training and consulting typically involves the maintenance or migration of DCE legacy systems and applications. However, with the recent availability of open source licenses for DCE code, we anticipate our working with a growing number of system developers to implement DCE on newer platforms and evolve DCE to meet new enterprise computing requirements.
